Barney aka Fluxx Films has been at the forefront of film making in Gloucester for a number of years now, his expertise is called upon by individual artists and organisations alike. he prides himself on his ability to create the moment and capture the mood when it comes to shooting film, whether that be a music video featuring Griz-O (or any one of the many other artists that call upon his expert eye) or if it’s to shoot a fact-finding film for Gloucester Culture Trust or any other organisation that relies on his ability to deliver work of the highest standard. Not only is he passionate about his craft but also representing Gloucester and its artists on screen.

You’ll see Barney’s creations throughout the website such is the demand from his fellow artists.

What have you been up to the last 6 months/what projects have you been working on?

The last month or so I’ve been working on a Covid-19 creative project. Check it out here.

Before that I worked toward getting accredited as an official Davinci Resolve colourist (video colour grading) which is the editing software I use and passed that a few weeks ago. Projects before that included loads of great shoots and projects and had a great and busy start to the year! A lot of my recent projects are on my website homepage. I’ve also been working on loads of business stuff and website stuff.

Has the lockdown affected you in any way or has the unexpected solitude allowed your creativity to flow?

It’s affected my work / business massively. All my shoots got cancelled! Financially it’s difficult. I’d say my creativity did take a big hit as collaboration and working as a team with others is when my work is at its best. It’s hard at the moment to get ideas because we are so limited in what we can do. The Covid-19 project I’m working on has been something I’m proud of though. It’s been a unique way to collaborate and the reaction has been amazing. I’m limited in what I can create but this is a workaround and something to concentrate on.

Will what’s gone on change or influence your work in future?

Yes, I’m hoping that Fluxx will still be alive and kicking and that it is still financially viable to be a filmmaker with social distancing becoming the new normal. I think a lot of production companies will go under. As far as my work goes I think storytelling is now more important than ever, especially for people who have lost so much to Coronavirus. Its made me re-evaluate what kind of work I’d like to do post Covid 19 where travel will be less important/possible .

Will it make you look at life differently, if so why?

It has made me realise how lucky I was before. I appreciate how free I was and really glad that I made the most of it with work and going on adventures. I’ve always tried not to take things for granted and this is even more important.

What can we expect to see from you when the lockdown’s over?

Not sure yet to be honest. I feel a bit powerless to decide as its out of my hands but I’m working hard to come out of this a better filmmaker and a better person. I’ve treated every day like work and haven’t stopped yet so I will continue to do this.

What are you looking forward to the most?

Seeing my family and friends again. Also working with people I frequently collaborate with. Going to the pool to go swimming which I miss for physical and mental health.

If you had to be locked down with another Artist with the view of writing in collaboration, who would it be and why? #LockdownWriteDown

Probably Wiley because he’s a legend and would be fun to hang out and make stuff with! Or maybe Wes Anderson because he’s one my favourite directors.

Is there any particular music or artist that you’re listening to as a way of lifting your spirits/inspiring you during these uncertain times #LockdownGetDown

I’m mainly listening to podcasts / audiobooks actually instead of music. Podcasts I’m listening to are creative rebels ear hustle being freelance

Are you reading more during these times and if so what #LockdownLiterature

Audiobooks I’m listening to are The art of happiness The science of storytelling This naked mind

Do you find yourself eating different food during the lockdown, have you a favourite go to comfort food? #QuarantineCuisine

I’m a veggie so just been eating loads of veg curries, slow cooked stews and nice salads. Also tried quite a few recipes from MOB kitchen which has been fun and easy, highly recommend that for comfort foods. I’m T Total and have been for around 8 months so sticking to that is part of my diet too! Thought I’d get that one in!

Thank you for giving us an insight into your current life and giving us some food for thought. We look forward to seeing more productions by Fluxx Films
