Amahra Spence — Community Worker and Artist in Service — 21st October, Gloucester Guildhall
Amahra Spence is a builder, community worker and artist in service. Her work explores the politics of space within ongoing histories of dispossession, displacement, and erasure. Amahra’s posture, whether in her creative or community practice, is to demonstrate live propositions at the intersection of play, performance, spatial practice and material infrastructure.
Amahra also leads Hood Futures Studio, developing and stewarding community-owned infrastructure rooted in spatial and cultural justice to support long-term neighbourhood resilience, self-determination and wealth(s). Currently developing a hotel in the spirit of Grandad’s house, an archive testifying the future, a fund led by young people and a multi-site apothecary, they anchor communities against racialised and class-based displacement while enabling cultural, social and economic activity to thrive. Their work shows how ownership, spirit and the design of space – historically grounded and future-facing – can underpin more just and local futures.
Amahra Spence appears at The Glos-sary on 21st October, 18:00–20:30 at Gloucester Guildhall, as part of a series of Wednesday evenings in conversation with invited writers and creatives, hosted by Georgia Williams.
